2019-2020 Executive Board
President
Year: 3rd
Major: Systems Engineering I am super excited to be the President for NSBE at UVA for the 2019-20 school year. NSBE over my 3 years at UVA has given me a place to be myself and ways to explore the various resources that UVA has. Off Grounds, NSBE has been a great place to learn from other black professionals all across Virginia in the best zone (#Ozone) and the hypest Region ever (#Region 2). As president, I hope to move the chapter to embrace Leadership with a Purpose (from the national & regional directives) and Connect to Grounds and our community. Feel free to email me at: [email protected] to learn more and support our directives! |
Vice President
Year: 3rd
Major: Aerospace Engineering I am a third year Aerospace Engineering major with a minor in technology entrepreneurship. NSBE has been an impactful and integral part of my life since my introduction to my high school’s Nsbe Junior chapter. This organization served as a bridge into the reality of dreams I once thought un-achievable in my adolescence. As an undergraduate student, NSBE allows me to connect with fellow minority STEM majors and professionals, exposes me to opportunities both professional and educational, and provides a sense of community consisting of like-minded peers. As Vice President, I will work alongside the executive board to create programming and events that help our members excel academically and professionally and to maintain the welcoming community that I have found NSBE at UVA to be. We will strive to make meetings more accessible and attendable for members as well as more relevant to their aspirations. |
Secretary
Year: 3rd
Major: Biomedical Engineering My name is Rita, and I am honored to be the NSBE Secretary for the 2019/20 year. NSBE has helped me find a community of friends and colleagues at UVA that experience the same challenges that come with being a minority at UVA and in engineering. NSBE has also allowed me to network with potential employers and companies and has given me a head start in finding a job upon graduation. Through the invited speakers that attend our meetings, I have been able to learn more about financial literacy, what set applicants apart in job fields, and also how to balance engineering school with extracurricular activities. |
Programs Chair
Year: 3rd
Major: Electrical Engineering As a junior in high school I had the good fortune to attend NSBE’s national convention. Participation in such an event solidified my interest in the pursuit of an engineering degree. Whether I am marveling at the sheer size of the career fair, interacting with engineers from other universities, or learning how to leverage my engineering skill set to be an entrepreneur I am so grateful for the development opportunities provided through NSBE. As the Programs chair I hope to use events as a means of fostering interactions amongst other minority engineering groups such as SHPE and SWE and also positively impact the community by engaging with the greater Charlottesville community on a consistent basis. |
Treasurer
Finance/Fundraising Chair
Year: 2nd
Major: Computer Engineering I first found out about NSBE after I had gotten accepted into UVA. I was told about how it was a community of black stem majors who wanted to help other black stem majors succeed by providing them with resources that they may not have. After having this conversation, I instantly knew that NSBE was an organization that I had to join and am glad that I did. NSBE has not only helped me improve my professionalism and skill set in the workplace but has also created a community of fellow black students that are all working to help one another succeed and that has truly helped me. As Financial & Fundraising Chair, I hope to create fundraising ideas that bring in enough income to allow NSBE to plan more fun and welcoming events. |
Parliamentarian
Year: 3rd
Major: Aerospace Engineering I, Rikia Freeman, am a third year at the University of Virginia majoring in aerospace engineering. NSBE has been influential in my approach to my coursework and career set up. Knowing that there are thousands of people that want to see someone like myself succeed and having opportunities to see other successful black students and professionals gives me the confidence to continue to aim higher academically and professionally. It was through NSBE that I learned that success is a collaborative effort. As parliamentarian, I wish to ensure that the chapter’s constitution and elections continue to support its members’ goals. |
Publications Chair
Year:3rd
Major: Mechanical Engineering I am a 3rd year mechanical engineering major at the University of Virginia. I joined NSBE at UVa my first year through an older friend who was a member. NSBE was a great way for me to be introduced to other black engineers at the university. It was nice to have other people who are very similar and come from the same background trying to pursue the same career as I. By meeting others in NSBE, I not only made friends, but I met students who I can work with during assignments, ask for help on homework, or study with. Regardless if we’re grinding out an assignment or just hanging, I’ve always had fun with the people I met through NSBE. Being publications chair and historian, I hope to get the word out more about the benefits of NSBE and our events to a wider audience. Additionally, what I hope to accomplish is to be able to share my success and fun with NSBE through many social media outlets and the newsletter in hopes others will see us as not only an academic society but a great, social group for anyone to be a member of. |
TORCH Chair
Conference Chair
Pre-College Initiative Chair
Membership Chair
Year: 3rd
Major: Systems Engineering I am a third year Systems Engineering major with a minor in technology and the environment with a business concentration. Coming into college, I knew I needed a place to share my ideas with like minded unique individuals who could relate to me on a level deeper than just academics. NSBE is that place for me. NSBE has given me the opportunity to go to places that I didn’t really think I would go to and meet people (Big Sean) you don’t see at your local grocery store. NSBE has also put me in a position to learn from those who have gone ahead of me and to avoid the mistakes they made. I can sit here and say right now I am more driven than I have ever been because of the things that I have seen my friends in this organization achieve and I know that when we work together the sky is only the beginning. |

What attracted me about NSBE Ever since I was in highschool was that NSBE has created an environment consisting of like minded individuals with similar passions whom also have interests to better our community as a whole. What I love most about NSBE is that it empowers minorities to fulfill their passions in STEM related fields.
